Seismics and the City: Christchurch-Building new bridges to the
future out of the rubble
Lyall Lukey was at a Rotary meeting in Central Christchurch when the lethal
February 22 quake hit. This dynamic and thought provoking mixed-media
presentation incorporates graphic video excerpts, a compelling story about
response and recovery in the wake of the quakes and some London Blitz-like
humour.
It has powerful lessons for individuals, organisations and communities
about planning for and responding to disasters and disruptive events.

Hi ho Silver Lining! Generation S Strikes Back
"Keeping active can increase your brain power. Scientists have discovered
that the human brain can improve with advancing years, dispelling the
common belief that a person's mental faculties peak in their twenties
"
Steven Swinford and Richard Kerbaj
More mature people are more likely to be rational than young people because
their brains are less susceptible to surges of dopamine, a "feelgood"
hormone that can lead to impulsive reactions. Researchers have found that
older people are able to retain a range of skills more effectively than
hitherto thought.
Expert knowledge is stored in brain cells known as dendritic spines, which seem to be protected against ageing. Despite slower brain "speed", older people solve problems more efficiently, drawing on "cognitive templates" of how they resolved similar problems in the past, especially in helping to turn ideas into action.
So, as Lyall Lukey shows in this fun/active multmedia presentation it really is Hi Ho Silver Lining!
The Forgotten Hero: Shackleton's Kiwi Captain
Challenge and motivation, team leading in a crisis, knowledge sharing and collaboration, team roles and teamwork.
This presentation incorporates the amazing rescue of Shackleton's Antarctic crew in 1914 and the crucial navigation role of Shackleton's Kiwi captain Frank Worsley in the epic 17 day rescue voyage in a small boat. It features some amazing film footage of the Shackleton rescue and offers insights into taking on new challenges, the role of leadership and teamwork and above all the use of applied knowledge.
It then briefly covers scientific and technological advances in Antarctic exploration today, via brief, stunning video clips of underwater life, modern icebreakers etc from Natural History New Zealand, and ends by challenging the audience to learn new skills and take on new challenges.
